For young, healthy cats, this may not seem like a big issue.

But for senior cats or cats with reduced mobility, maintaining this position throughout every meal may be less comfortable.

There’s also the shape of the bowl itself.

Some traditional bowls are narrow or deep, meaning your cat’s whiskers repeatedly touch the sides while eating.

Plastic bowls can also retain smells and food residue over time.

Some cats are particularly sensitive around the chin and mouth, so keeping their feeding surface clean is important.

Then there’s stability.

Because many plastic bowls are extremely light, enthusiastic cats can easily push them around the kitchen while trying to eat.

Traditional Raised Feeders

At first glance, raised feeders seem like the obvious solution.

Instead of forcing your cat to eat directly from floor level, they bring the food closer to your cat.

That can certainly make mealtimes more comfortable.

However, not every raised feeder is equally well designed.

Some simply place a completely flat bowl higher off the ground.

The bowl may be elevated, but your cat can still have to position their head awkwardly to reach the food.

Others are surprisingly tall and may not be appropriate for smaller cats.

And bulky wooden or plastic stands can take up unnecessary space around the feeding area.
